Morocco is committed to becoming a leader in electric vehicle production and green transport by fully managing the manufacturing process. The plan includes boosting exports and modernizing public transportation with electric buses, aiming for a threefold export increase by 2030 and supporting a transition to zero carbon emissions.
Morocco has outlined an ambitious strategy to establish itself as a leader in electric vehicle (EV) production and promote green transportation. According to Industry and Trade Minister Ryad Mezzour, the nation aims to complete the entire electric vehicle manufacturing process, from raw material extraction to battery production and vehicle assembly.
During a recent green energy conference in Casablanca, Mezzour emphasized that this transformative initiative is already underway. Morocco aspires to become the only country in the Euro-African region that can independently manufacture electric vehicles from inception to finished product, incorporating mining of essential materials such as phosphate and cobalt.
The Moroccan government anticipates that this initiative will significantly boost the nation’s exports, projecting a threefold increase by 2030. In addition to enhancing car production capabilities, Morocco is focusing on upgrading public transportation by investing in electric buses. They plan to incorporate 7,000 electric buses into the national transport fleet, with the initial batch of 1,300 on order.
Officials further disclosed their intention to locally produce high-powered electric buses, which currently range in cost from $180,000 to $200,000 each. As the 2030 FIFA World Cup approaches, Morocco sees this green initiative as key to modernizing its transport infrastructure and reducing environmental pollution. Minister Mezzour stated that these actions are integral to Morocco’s broader objective of achieving zero carbon emissions in the future.
