In a recent interview on GhanaWeb TV’s Election Desk on December 7, 2024, Uganda’s Electoral Commissioner, Anthony Okello, praised Ghana’s electoral framework for its dedication to fairness, transparency, and credibility. Serving as an observer, Mr. Okello highlighted the effectiveness of Ghana’s verification system, which he believes should serve as a model for other African nations.
Mr. Okello expressed appreciation for the proactive measures implemented by Ghana, stating: “I have been here since the opening of polls, and I want to thank the people of Ghana for their approach they are using. I learnt a lot of interesting facts with my team.” He emphasized the significance of validating all ballot papers prior to their distribution to voters, enhancing the overall integrity of the electoral process.
He explained, “You see one important aspect that I have picked is that all ballot papers are validated before they are given to voters and I think it enables whatever entries placed in the ballot box to be validated. So, at the end of the day, if you find a strange ballot paper that is not validated, then I think this process brings credibility.”
Additionally, Mr. Okello remarked on the utility of Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs) in preventing unauthorized voting. He noted, “I think this is good because you are relying on the machine for verification, and you want to ensure credibility, and you will not have strangers. Those who have not registered in that polling station cannot vote because you verify them using a code which is in the voters register.” He concluded by asserting that these measures fundamentally enhance electoral security.
Electoral integrity is a cornerstone of democratic governance, essential for fostering public trust in electoral processes. Ghana has made significant strides in implementing robust electoral systems, especially through innovative verification methods. These strategies not only facilitate the accurate identification of eligible voters but also help mitigate instances of electoral fraud. Uganda’s Electoral Commissioner, Anthony Okello, has observed these practices firsthand, noting their potential applicability to other nations across the continent. Such endorsements highlight Ghana’s role as a leader in electoral reform and international best practices.
In summary, Uganda’s Electoral Commissioner Anthony Okello commended Ghana’s electoral process for its transparency and reliability. His observations underscore the critical importance of ballot validation and biometric technology in safeguarding the integrity of elections. As Ghana exemplifies effective electoral practices, it sets a pioneering standard that could inspire reforms in other African nations. Mr. Okello’s insights contribute to the ongoing dialogue about enhancing democratic processes within the continent.
