Ethiopia Launches First Green Mobility Exhibition to Promote EVs and Sustainability

Ethiopia held its first-ever Ethio-Green Mobility 2024 exhibition from November 22-25 in Addis Ababa, showcasing innovations in electric vehicles and renewable energy. The event emphasizes the government’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions, promoting sustainable transport, and fostering local manufacturing of EVs. Current efforts aim to increase the number of electric vehicles on Ethiopian roads significantly over the next decade.

Ethiopia recently launched its inaugural green mobility exhibition, the Ethio-Green Mobility 2024, held from November 22 to November 25 at the Huajian International Light Industry Special Economic Zone in Addis Ababa. This event is a significant move towards the country’s goal of reducing carbon emissions by promoting green transport solutions. The exhibition displays advanced electric vehicles (EVs) and renewable energy technologies, accentuating the government’s commitment to fostering a climate-resilient economy based on sustainable mobility practices.

Ethiopian Minister of Transport and Logistics Alemu Sime emphasized the importance of the event in reducing the country’s reliance on nonrenewable energy sources. The expo attracted numerous Chinese exhibitors and provided a valuable networking opportunity for firms involved in green mobility. The growing interest in electric vehicles was evident; Li Xuan, a representative from Neta Auto, pointed out that there has been a significant increase in the demand for EVs following the government’s restriction on gasoline vehicle imports.

Local manufacturers, such as the Belayneh Kindie Metal Engineering Complex, showcased their electric minibuses assembled from imported components. Their sales figures reflect the rapidly increasing interest in EVs, with 216 minibuses sold within a year. The government is also facilitating the EV market by offering tax exemptions and financial support for importers. Additionally, the exhibition highlighted innovative products like electric tricycles, which are becoming increasingly popular for their efficiency and cost-effectiveness, particularly in rural areas.

Currently, Ethiopia has over 100,000 electric vehicles on its roads, with ambitions to increase this number to 500,000 over the next decade, effectively replacing 95% of fuel-powered vehicles. The government aims to bolster the production of electric vehicles and enhance public charging infrastructure, thereby promoting a more sustainable and energy-efficient transportation system. In light of rising global fuel prices, Ethiopia’s decision to halt the importation of gasoline and diesel vehicles marks a critical step towards embracing a greener future. Visitors, such as Yonas Leaketsion, commented positively on the affordability and desirability of the showcased electric vehicles.

The Ethio-Green Mobility 2024 exhibition represents Ethiopia’s proactive approach towards ensuring a sustainable future through the advancement of electric mobility. With a firm commitment to reduce carbon emissions, the Ethiopian government is facilitating the transition to electric vehicles by banning imports of gasoline vehicles and enhancing local manufacturing. The event serves as a platform for showcasing innovative technologies and facilitating the establishment of networks among stakeholders in the green mobility sector, thus promoting market growth and consumer education.

Ethiopia’s first green mobility exhibition marks a pivotal milestone in the country’s journey towards sustainable transportation and a reduced carbon footprint. Through the introduction of policies that encourage electric vehicle adoption and the establishment of local manufacturing capabilities, the government is paving the way for eco-friendly mobility solutions. With ambitious targets set for the future, Ethiopia is positioning itself as a leader in renewable energy utilization in the transport sector, inspired by its wealth of natural resources and commitment to combating climate change.
